Questions and Answers

Who is HypnoBirthing® suitable for?

HypnoBirthing® is suitable for both  first time mums and mums who've given birth before.  It is also a very therapuetic way to prepare for another birth if a traumatic birth has been previously experienced.  This would apply to around 50% of my clients.

A HypnoBirth practitioner can help women who are scared of birth, who are anxious because of a bad experience last time, or who just want a calmer, easier, more natural birth experience.
Hypnobirthing® is an alternative way of giving birth if you don’t want the sometimes over-medicalised way geared to stressful, painful, possibly fearful birth, offering drugs.

Will I be 'out of it' if I use HypnoBirthing®?

No, absolutely not. With hypnosis, including the self-hypnosis of HypnoBirthing®, your mind will be fully focused, completely relaxed, fully aware of what is going on around you and totally in control - and you will be able to 'tune out' the distractions.

Will it be a completely pain-free labour and birth?

No. There are many factors that can affect a birth, some of which are outside our control, however, 90% of my clients haven't
needed any form of pain relief. The women feel no pain, but, typically describe the surge (contraction in medical language) sensation as “pressure”.

A few may require mild analgesia such as gas and air.  To date I haven't known of anyone who has needed this.

The remaining 5-10% may fall into what we call “special circumstances” when medical intervention is needed. Indeed, this happened to one of my clients after only 3 classes, but she found that what she and her husband had learned really helped and the midwives were very impressed with how she coped. Their theatre experience - negotiated with the medical staff to fulfil as much of their birth plan as possible - was very positive and the birth respectful and joyful.  This has happened three more times since then, as I prepare any ladies who "might have" a c-section to have a birth plan B, discussed with the consultant for that eventuality, so that they still feel in control of the process.

Remember - the aim of HypnoBirthing® is not a completely pain-free and picture-perfect 'natural' birth (although that is very possible). Also, like any childbirth preparation class, the success of the techniques is related to the amount of practice you put in.

Our aim is to enable you to have a calmer, easier, more comfortable birth- where you are in control - and in a way that most mirrors Nature.  Birth without stress is so beneficial for mother and baby.
